LIFERS – a photo series by Jessica Bryony

Dedicated, passionate and true to the lifestyle, these Lifers have been skateboarding for the majority of their lives. Youth may come and go, but skateboarding has stayed with them.

PARK(ing) Day – Münster, Germany

On September 18, 2020 – World Wide PARK(ing) Day –  activists block city streets in an effort to take back the space all those cars occupy all the time. Few things are more annoying and useless than cars in a city. We, as skateboarders, are pretty much used to “repurposing city space”, so we decided to build a little ramp with the help of our local “BTC” D.I.Y. Crew. We added some beers to the equation and it all went down as a memorable afternoon.

ROG Skatepark – Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Rog nation managed to resist by organizing a never-ending festival and opening the place to a wider public. Musicians, artists and performers came from everywhere to give support. Just to show how important a place like this truly is. In the end, Rog was built by people, active citizens, who devote a great part of their lives to providing autonomous and low-cost solutions to many of the city’s flaws.

Las Chicaz in the Nude

This year ‘Las Chicas’ had their gathering at the one and only Nude Bowl in desert hot springs. All crews had their tents pitched up and got ready to shred. On the first day during the day the skate conditions were favorable, but on the second day the afternoon clouds rolled in and light droplets of H2O started to come down and were persistent all through the night.

Bronson Ditch “Urban Skate Project” – Hollywood, California

Nestled in the Griffith Park area (Hollywood Hills), where hiking trails welcome hundreds of people a day, Bronson Canyon ditch has been the destination for any skater who visits southern California and more specifically, Hollywood. But like the Hollywood movies that have emerged over the years, someone decided to do something new and exciting with a location that has been untouched for decades. Clayton Graul and his crew have recently taken the DIY approach to Bronson Ditch and have added some creativity to its legendary status.

“c.1.. sunk”: thoughts from Italy about pigs, democracy and concrete

Concrete is the material on which the people that try to govern us have founded their emperor of fluxes, temporary idols, bi-dimensional prophets, heroes without swords. We have grown while playing with it. While drawing in three dimensions imaginary curves and corners, we have shown our own independence from the “legal” idea of space, our own autonomy in respect to the experts’ “professionalism”…

Skate Rebel Resistance

If you haven’t heard, there’s a war going on outside. Skate rebel armies are waging a guerrilla offensive against corporate colonialism. You see, after the Cold War ended the architects of the New World Order decided that they owned everything. The smoke had not yet cleared in Angola, Nicaragua and Afghanistan before they built a mega state anchored in D.C. to buoy the interests of corporate fascism. They called it “free trade” and capitalism, but it was socialism for the world’s wealthy. Its supporters high jacked the media and sponsored a propaganda campaign to roll back any gains made in the arena of civil rights over the last century on a global scale. The New Order promised…

Under the Bridge: Köln – Built It… & They Will Come

A month after the city had a brief but futile attempt to destroy the under the bridge DIY spot built by the skaters of Köln, the Yama Skateboards team from Austria were passing through town on their way to Belgium. We had planned a mini-ramp session at the Lohse Ramp, but Germany’s sketchy summer time weather canceled that plan with intermittent rain throughout the day. Our only option was to hit up the DIY spot…
