The park is sick. Well most of us left before we got to see it all completed which was a little disheartening, but what was there was rad. The floor is a bit ghetto in places and, in contrast, some of the ramps are professional enough to be seen on a actual official skatepark build – this kind of sums up the entire build: somewhere between a skatepark and doing a DIY job.
Not too far inland from the sunny beaches of Venice sat an off the grid renegade skatepark….
The town of Zarautz on the Atlantic coast in Basque country has a long skate and surf tradition. A town well known for it’s world surfing championship held every year since the late 1980s also has a skatepark build on the beach back in this time which was a copy of the La Kantera skatepark.
The decision, to build our own concrete dream was already made – all we needed was a good space.
Unmodern Skate Shop in Sante Fe Springs (Los Angeles) Celebrated Friday the 13th by grilling black cats, skating under ladders, and playing music under an umbrella indoors. There was nothing unlucky about watching the sesh that transpired on this most superstitious night.
I started going to meetings and pitching the idea for a skate park in my home town of Valley Center, California about five years ago. At that time they, parks and rec., said there was no money for something like that so I didn’t pursue it for another year, until I saw a sign for and new sports field to be built.
A few weeks ago I visited my friend Matt from Minus Ramps and Pools. I hadn’t seen him for more then two and a half years. Reason enough to go for that ten hour drive from my place to Matt’s home. Another good reason was that Soup, the mastermind behind General Sherman’s Radius Floats, was visiting Matt. I had planned to stay just for the weekend, but I soon realized that this was not enough time.
