Skate scene report: Galicia, Spain

ENGLISH (original Español versión a continuación):

“Skating in Spain. The first places that come to mind are Barcelona, the Basque Country, and Madrid. But we all know that there are lots of other interesting locations on this peninsula. This article is all about the north-westernmost corner, Galicia.

Galicia is divided into four provinces: Coruña, Lugo, Orense and Pontevedra, with Vigo and Coruña being the most populated cities.

In recent years an annual event, Marisquiño, held in August in Vigo, has been bringing the best Spanish and Portuguese skaters together to enjoy the outstanding skate spots and the local cuisine. We cannot boast a perfect climate, with very wet winters and hardly a week in summer without rain, but that all results in a very green landscape rich in nature, not only in the mountains but also on the many coastal beaches.

In this article we will present an overview of some of the spots and parks in this region. There are many more on offer, but hopefully we can arouse your curiosity to pay us a visit.

As far as the oldest parks go, we have the Samil halfpipe in Vigo, the Frisga ramps in Lugo and the mini-ramp and spine in Ourense which have stood the test of time with help from new paint jobs. The newest and best are those in Cambre, Bastiagueiro and Ferrol.

Unfortunately, city authorities tend to contract companies to install their prefabricated modules or to build parks with little experience or sense. That results in considerable outrage, for example with the halfpipe in Ribeira, the skate park in Carballo, the Fene bowl or the course in Milladoiro.

Ramps can be found in some skate parks, for example Boiro, Bueu, Ferrol, and Eirís in Coruña, but the most notable are the wooden ramp in Oza dos Ríos and Iván Maroña’s halfpipe that he built on his own land, with his own money and on his own time. There are also a couple of small bowls like the one in Salvaterra almost on the Portuguese border, and in Arteixo on the outskirts of Coruña.

There aren’t many D.I.Y. spots. We have Maroña’s metal halfpipe mentioned above, the Carrefour warehouse in Betanzos (where the locals have started to return after having to leave), some modules under the motorway bridge in Pontevedra, the small Bazán square in Ferrol with planters, boxes and a flat area, the boxes made by the folks at SCR in Coruña and a couple of barriers, one in Santiago, the other in Vigo.

Street spots: the big cities are the winners. Vigo is teeming with marble and the famous Plaza del Náutico is a paradise for grinds, but all in all, the city harbors loads of skating gems. New squares are offering lots of skating opportunities in Coruña, like the Plaza España or the renovated Plaza Pontevedra. There are some perfect wave sets in Santiago to get great air in a very quiet area. But Ourense, Ferrol, Pontevedra and Lugo also have there meeting places and thousands of great spots in towns smaller than you could imagine.

I hope that you are at least a little curious and want to pay us a visit. You’ll not be disappointed, neither by the region nor the people.” Javier Saavedra
