Castro Vert Ramp – Night of the Living Vert – Cantabria, Spain

“On Saturday June 30, Volcom organized the first half-pipe championship in Spain since a long time. In Spain half pipe skating was big from 1988-1992… but then vert died.

Now, 21 years later we again see this full-fledged show, but it’s a shame the day was not all good, as rain was threatening most of the day.

Spain is way behind in northern European comparison. Clearly, our climate is very different and we do not have indoor facilities where you can skate all day except an old half-pipe, maybe someone someday will get something new and then things will change, but so far the European level of people like Andy Scott, or the French Jean Postec clearly expressed their superiority: McTwists, flip air grabs, extremely difficult liptricks – there skating is at another level ….

Having said that, the day was super nice, a spectacular setting amongst friends of all ages, with anchovies and beers … and good skating.

Andy Scott was involved in the shock of the afternoon and ended up sleeping in Laredo hospital due to a blow to the head – but he’s okay.

Hopefully, someday, the Spanish will have a bigger part in the half-pipe skateboarding world, but so far we have much to learn…” – photos + words Alex Mosterin
