The fiesta has always been a great success with beautiful concerns, multi-cultural diversity, skate, art, diy,…

But now, Brusk is dead!

The structure remains, renamed Sk8boarders a.s.b.l and with it remain many fans & friends.
This year was the first year that we made the party without Brusk – it was still a success.

Who are we? We are just two skaters because more or less everybody from Brusk makes others things now… Myself (Damien) and Jimmy.

We arrived two years before the end of Brusk and now we want to continue the skate guerilla, and luckily for us some other people help us out with the administrative shit.

So this year’s Fiesta was too crazy! Many skaters, many people, many bands, original things & full improvisation.

The party started in the morning with a skate and circus initiation, then the first band started to play and some stands opened (food, drink, serigraphy) but no labels, just friends.

In the afternoon there was different best tricks and a little skate and bmx demo by some locals.

There was also a photography exhibition with a tea dance for everybody in the nursing home, just on the other side of the Ursuline square. Like every year we have made a new design in the square – the weather is too bad in Bruxelles so now all the square is like a sunny beach!

Around 6pm started the best part: Bowl session with live bands – three bands playing up on the deck of the bowl and a really good session for this year.

“Every year the Fiesta des Ursulines somehow marks the beginning of the skateboarding summer season in Brussels. However, the weather isn’t always on our side. But beer is a good alternative to missing sunlight, and we Belgians know how to make up for it. Our top animator Phil was at his best as usual, dressed as a womenly kinda joker. All-in-all the event was a great success, gathering skaters, rockers, groupies, mom’s and dad’s, kiddies, punks and hipsters. The gigs around the bowl were rad and the skaters hit it hard during the session. So fuck the weather and let’s skate!” - Pauline Miller

DIY Busua Beach – Ghana, Africa

After a surf holiday in Ghana in the winter of 2010, Michael offered to buy a piece of land in Paradise village in Busua (west Ghana coast). The dream of “Miche” opening his own hostel would become a reality and he was determined to build Ghana’s first skate spot in this plot.

Having persuaded the local chieftain with a large bottle of spirits, the contract which states he can lease the land for 99 years was signed. Construction could begin. Miche then contacted his buddies in Sweden that were not slow to join. Jens Bengtsson, Petter Ingelhammar, Michael Hallgren and Michelle Larsson, the lack of construction knowledge was no obstacle, they simply called Magnus Ljungdell, who runs the company Supercoast and is a real fox when it comes to anything skejtrelaterade (skate related). He jumped on the project directly with the words: “of course we are going to build a Bowl in West Africa.” Said and done. The project would take three and a half weeks but after some complications, it was a few days shorter.

We took a few different flight itineraries to get down to Africa – some over Madrid and a few stopped over in London. Everybody would come down to Paradise on New Years’ Eve but the flights from London were postponed so it was a grey London nyårshimmel (New Year’s sky) for all except Peter and Bob waiting in the Ghana’s capital Accra.

Petter and Koffe pull up on a najs (New Years’s) skate session punctuated by a bunch of soldiers who were not so amused at seeing two pale Swedes skating on African soil. Between the threats of arrest “christmas-gifts” were mentioned several times. Even though the presents in the form of dollar bills were distributed they were still not satisfied. That’s when Petter promised he would fix something with one of his military’s brother in the British army. How the hell was he going to make that happen? But Petter promised a lot and said he would keep his promise and even gave his phone number so they could keep in touch…

In the beginning of 2011, finally everyone involved and took a cold under the African sun and looked at the site that would become Ghana’s first skatepark. How was the whole situation?
Poolbygget (Pool construction) was financed by Miche who based his hostel on the same site. All boards, shoes, clothes and stuff we gathered together through friends and acquaintances. We had with us a fifteen boards and approximately 25 pairs of shoes and a helmet.

Have you received any feedback so far, are kids skating it or is Miche sipping umbrella drinks in the pool now?
Yes. Magnus has been down again and spent his holidays there. Kids are skateboarding a lot in the bowl and also some tourists have found it there. It did not take long before it was clear you could see the talent among people who have never seen a skateboard before. I traveled back again in the beginning of 2013 with my friend Oscar. I was surprised what good condition the concrete was in after two years under the strong African sun. Kids skating and doing well in the bowl. Even Miche had been back in Busua this spring and got the kids together for a competition.

Any good stories from the trip?
A funny incident was when me and Magnus just added the last concrete on the bottom of the bowl and would be finished with the day’s work. So crazy tired and sweaty. Then we heard a crash from the bushes and a large rooster came flying out and put five large footprints in the concrete. Then we just had to start again!

Skateable boat hull – Florida

“Sunrise Surf Shop from Jacksonville Beach Florida’s Skate crew took an extended weekend recently to the West Coast of Florida to sample some of Team Pain‘s new concrete. After a session at the new Bradenton park a local asked, “You want to skate a boat hull?” A short ride later we arrived at the nearby industrial park to find the “hull” is actually a mold with a huge open seam running the length of it. Apparently it’s been skated for a while, and the gaps were still covered. Joe Marrara got in, and got down.” - Ken Forsyth

Rumble in the Park – Gmunden, Austria

UNO DIY – Melbourne, Australia

“The UNO ghetto, a random thought that quickly turned into a reality, masterminded by Ben Hermans.

With a lot of hard work from all the homies, an abandoned lot within the northern suburbs of Melbourne, containing most resources that were required, was quickly cleaned and concreted within two weeks.

Once finished, word quickly spread throughout the Melbourne skateboarding community and still continues to be a regular skate spot for most crews.

Originally beginning as a skateboarding video started by Louie Dodd, three friends (James, Ben and Louie) quickly turned the name ‘UNO‘ into their creative outlet, after realizing Melbourne’s lack of local skateboarding brands.

“Everybody needs a place to call their own, and it sure helps if that place has pool coping. Getting a private indoor setup together is a giant pain in the ass, but the reward of skating a place that’s exactly what you want to skate is unbeatable. All I can say is, if you’re thinking about it, just go for it; its a lot to do but you’ll figure it out. There’s plenty of spacious warehouses in shitty neighborhoods that landlords would just love to rent to tenants as appreciative as a group of skaters. And there’s more resources out there than ever before to help you figure out the build. We’re already skating our second warehouse, so get out there and get that shit done! Ceramica DIY “The Treasure Hunt” – Portugal

“Some friends joined us to skate Ceramica, to have a good time and help us with some money for more concrete.

The guys from Lisbon arrived the day before to camp, skate and barbeque. We had the pleasure to have Ricardo Fonseca with us, this guy has a lot of funny stories to tell and he keeps everybody with a smile on their faces. He is a true legend.

I made a photo exhibition to tell the history of Ceramica from 2010 until today.

I can’t remember the tricks everybody did because my mind was full of good vibrations. The treasure hunt was a good idea from Vox Portugal’s guy. When he made the contest, no one felt the competition, only the joy of having some fun with our friends.

I have to thank Vox Portugal, Confusion, Hoax, Muckefuck and everybody who help the D.I.Y in Portugal.
